Have you asked yourself, “Can I do better?” lately? I’m not talking about comparing yourself to other cosplayers. I just told you not to do that yesterday! No, this question is one that should be asked by you to compare to yourself to, well, yourself. If you desire to grow in your cosplay skills then you need to face yourself head on and determine whether or not you are living up to your potential.

Now if all you want to do is stay at the same level, then feel free to ignore this post, but with the prevalence of the “cosplay glow-up” trend, I think most people want to see an improvement in their cosplay skills over the years. These skills could be sewing, make-up, styling, posing, whatever. If you want to get better, you have to challenge yourself constantly.

“Can I do better?”

It doesn’t have to be big steps. It could be as small as mastering a cat eye or learning how to sew a blind hem correctly. Find areas that could be improved and challenge yourself. I don’t know about you, but doing things the same way time after time gets boring. I need something new to learn with each project so I don’t get bored.

Personally, I fall into the category of challenging myself a bit too much with too big steps. There is a negative side to being a perfectionist after all. My current challenge? It’s not bad. I’m learning how to “finish” a garment professionally with a variety of finishings. I need the practice there are so many methods to choose from. I’m going to try out Hong Kong binding on my current project! Wish me luck!

What’s your challenge to yourself?
